For this edition I will give another (I think) easy challenge, so the Schott rule is in effect.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJl0jHKjcBFpRrUblRIMKjmNdeNA4vL9MrJhEie6GZExKQ84BGNNXjVFP6qeRoIhvc1kXUCKiGJdKwftckqLiwJWOLd65akwtbQL0veJ5FWCNfB6dMO1lPn7guzyMJt4pqRVSUgwtODZU/s1600/WOGE+504.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJl0jHKjcBFpRrUblRIMKjmNdeNA4vL9MrJhEie6GZExKQ84BGNNXjVFP6qeRoIhvc1kXUCKiGJdKwftckqLiwJWOLd65akwtbQL0veJ5FWCNfB6dMO1lPn7guzyMJt4pqRVSUgwtODZU/s320/WOGE+504.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
As always, be the first post a comment with the location and something about its geologic significance, and you win the privilege of hosting the next Where on Google Earth challenge. For rules, tips, and a list of past locations, see Felix Bossert's <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.no/">blog</a>.<br />
<br />Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09615753082396788340noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244188224231734238.post-25600130235489916392014-12-02T02:01:00.001+00:002014-12-17T22:05:44.894+00:00WOGE #464 Update 4I have not had much time to spend on WOGE lately, but when Ole gave such a nice hint to his last <a href="http://overburdenblog.blogspot.no/2014/11/where-on-google-earth-463.html">entry</a>, I could not resist trying. I had already guessed that Canada might be a good place to check, so I began focusing on the border areas, and I was able to find Turtle Mountain pretty quickly. This seems like an area with interesting geology and scenery very different from the surrounding landscape.<br />
<br />
For the next challenge I give you an area I have had in mind for some time:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtmLBcHvZsJKKl3bIZRpZAD-CSYuGGvl8nc-e3UsNml3NNohsynSQ5f1d_Efz1EPFM6Jmcluj_VZzPqd9GffzOZHqDtVcywZCAqJWAyTEhLShZHtpeTBHcnKo6L7gtHhPVYPOzkb92MUM/s1600/WOGE+464.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtmLBcHvZsJKKl3bIZRpZAD-CSYuGGvl8nc-e3UsNml3NNohsynSQ5f1d_Efz1EPFM6Jmcluj_VZzPqd9GffzOZHqDtVcywZCAqJWAyTEhLShZHtpeTBHcnKo6L7gtHhPVYPOzkb92MUM/s1600/WOGE+464.jpg" height="154" width="320" /></a></div>
Tell us the latitude and longitude and something about the geology seen in the picture. I especially would like some comment about what is happening there right now. The winner gets to choose the next location and host WOGE. I think this one might be quite difficult, so there will be no Schott rule. For rules and history of the game, visit Felix Bossert's <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.no/">blog</a>. Enjoy your search!<br />
<br />
It's been a few days, so here is a hint: The right side image was taken on March 12, the left side on November 2.<br />
<br />
Maybe a larger view will be helpful.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Still no guesses, so I will share a close-up. This is from the top left corner of the first view, or the top right of the second view.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM0TIwlgiXSk3mp2IeA5O5QGan94iYAjN06c710wig4H84UEsxIYFuvWgyoZ9Ls1m3Bz3qkMIkRHaZNJWwne9cH7z2UCgUyDa0GXDSMv2QfEZ0nJN39i-2Ku15tZLzAz6yb7SpvZIlR9A/s1600/WOGE+464+close-up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM0TIwlgiXSk3mp2IeA5O5QGan94iYAjN06c710wig4H84UEsxIYFuvWgyoZ9Ls1m3Bz3qkMIkRHaZNJWwne9cH7z2UCgUyDa0GXDSMv2QfEZ0nJN39i-2Ku15tZLzAz6yb7SpvZIlR9A/s1600/WOGE+464+close-up.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>
Even at this scale, I can't see any penguins. However, you might catch a glimpse of one of these:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09615753082396788340noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244188224231734238.post-92215279631759672322014-02-14T17:27:00.000+00:002014-02-24T14:56:47.586+00:00WOGE #426 update 3Thanks to a hint from Ole (and to Luis asking for the hint) I was able to solve the somewhat challenging <a href="http://overburdenblog.blogspot.no/2014/02/where-on-google-earth-425.html">WOGE 425</a>. I was already thinking of Scandinavia because of the deep shadows seen even in a summertime picture. In search of the green beach I started looking at areas with copper deposits. I found scenery in Norway that was similar enough to encourage me to keep looking there, and in a few more minutes I found the Gusdal olivine pit. Ole made sure the port facilities were just off the edge of the image so that it would not be too easy to find.<br />
<br />
For the next edition I have something green and mountainous as well:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRggZQ9oOpmkO2jgdFSEcHaqQacqkVW3_nx1AfJs7nOEsJZqjXF_POwJou9CdpUlcO-PTBkv03WX70o1ZVOYEvyGoPNuVYicQcK1s-RFdgqwJiVb4LWgdxOjlPB9jlXzO5aQ5Ai7q3rNE/s1600/WOGE+426.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRggZQ9oOpmkO2jgdFSEcHaqQacqkVW3_nx1AfJs7nOEsJZqjXF_POwJou9CdpUlcO-PTBkv03WX70o1ZVOYEvyGoPNuVYicQcK1s-RFdgqwJiVb4LWgdxOjlPB9jlXzO5aQ5Ai7q3rNE/s1600/WOGE+426.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I suspect that if no one recognizes this mountain immediately, then it will be quite hard to find. There will be no Schott rule this time, and I have a series of additional images to use as hints. I will release one every few days until someone wins. To win, just tell us the coordinates of the location and some information about the geology. Finding the geology of this spot was very difficult for me, so I will give some suggestions. First, look at all the pictures, since some of them have good views of rock formations. Next, go to the geological agency for this country and you should be able to download a geologic map of the local area with enough detail to tell us how the mountain formed. For more rules, hints, and the history of WOGE, look at Felix Bossert's <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.de/">blog</a>.<br />
<br />
It has been four days, so I will start sharing the hint images: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuBeHzeS45XaFCLDBemKVQEicUg4deHnfvOfQ7gn_NXRuGi1-D9DjzJs0OpCIqpoQ_tFlLBqf2QrNwkUGARshwb3WanB5tJakCzZocqwPOHxx5F_rcH8RD9Yam0ozyMstQ9zqtzWcAhzY/s1600/WOGE+426+oblique.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuBeHzeS45XaFCLDBemKVQEicUg4deHnfvOfQ7gn_NXRuGi1-D9DjzJs0OpCIqpoQ_tFlLBqf2QrNwkUGARshwb3WanB5tJakCzZocqwPOHxx5F_rcH8RD9Yam0ozyMstQ9zqtzWcAhzY/s1600/WOGE+426+oblique.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>
Time for a little more help. This is not actually a close-up of our location. It is a mountainside about fifteen kilometers away:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVlxxuA0Hp8A0LV5PnIJ71WRDUk-VGsP8c91ODWKlUXFMf4x3sZkYZXcI26l008ZpHW7xdVQLs-pVU5rHXrCNy7BmJiKFKHYw-F3uEsIPlSUaEPchCsHMlbyhbOTC6WUOsIsK8YLSemz4/s1600/WOGE+426_nearby.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVlxxuA0Hp8A0LV5PnIJ71WRDUk-VGsP8c91ODWKlUXFMf4x3sZkYZXcI26l008ZpHW7xdVQLs-pVU5rHXrCNy7BmJiKFKHYw-F3uEsIPlSUaEPchCsHMlbyhbOTC6WUOsIsK8YLSemz4/s1600/WOGE+426_nearby.jpg" height="188" width="320" /></a></div>
Maybe a view of the larger area will help:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjmt4tjYgCPU0l7eNC13SyXN5X15o8xXTKDMcdHE4LFEC0O4-AC77TM0jO_4sLINk5G8n87LcW2Ebvl__RZEvGqVQLOIBR_y9p12TSdkoqGYp0f6iABKZs2jdkhZCzEnUpHlbNdMHGe8o/s1600/WOGE+426_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjmt4tjYgCPU0l7eNC13SyXN5X15o8xXTKDMcdHE4LFEC0O4-AC77TM0jO_4sLINk5G8n87LcW2Ebvl__RZEvGqVQLOIBR_y9p12TSdkoqGYp0f6iABKZs2jdkhZCzEnUpHlbNdMHGe8o/s1600/WOGE+426_2.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>

When I saw the sharp contrast between the mountains and the plain, I guessed that this area might be somewhat near a coastline. The irregular fields suggested Europe or Asia, so I started looking in the most logical place: Turkey. Finding this area near Salihli only took a few minutes, but tracking down information about the geology took a bit longer.<br />
<br />
For the next edition, I present a (hopefully) easy challenge:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBNUTt4Mrg3WFYPfLMiAw0lJeacMxL0cGKc0zR6Abgi5wZfqLVeY2MLiVtqKOJ4yqxgEAoR_5AKXM6HGnKayJMhBwZMzmskxLNjLvk96kKNz-8gVJNb6-xHy_T3XOAbLDnHDPPe5GRUIk/s1600/WOGE_419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBNUTt4Mrg3WFYPfLMiAw0lJeacMxL0cGKc0zR6Abgi5wZfqLVeY2MLiVtqKOJ4yqxgEAoR_5AKXM6HGnKayJMhBwZMzmskxLNjLvk96kKNz-8gVJNb6-xHy_T3XOAbLDnHDPPe5GRUIk/s320/WOGE_419.jpg" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>
Be the first to give the coordinates and tell us something about the geology, and you win the privilege of hosting the next WOGE. For more details about the contest check out Felix Bossert's <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.de/">blog</a>. The Schott rule is not in effect this time. My Internet service has been very unreliable lately, so if someone posts the correct location and I have not replied within a day or so, any other regular player may confirm the win so that the game can continue. Have fun searching!Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09615753082396788340noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244188224231734238.post-50562792157928127402013-09-03T01:45:00.000+01:002013-09-03T01:45:27.918+01:00WOGE #401After watching other players rapidly solve some very interesting challenges during the last month, I decided to try again with Brian's <a href="http://www.skywise711.com/blog/2013/09/02/where-on-google-earth-400/">WOGE 400</a>. I saw that this was obviously a volcano located in an arid region of the northern hemisphere, yet there were farmland and large lakes nearby. I loaded my Google Earth volcano placemarks (available <a href="http://volcano.si.edu/products.cfm?p=9">here</a>) and looked around in Mexico, then moved over to the middle east and quickly found Nemrut volcano. As Brian's post suggests, this is a location with both a rich history geologically and an interesting human story.<br />
<br />
For the next edition of WOGE, I will keep things arid. This location is not famous, but the climate makes it possible to see the underlying geology very clearly. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcbaXRVSD3XWOKrg1nHP1GGj6Vpco1A0TOoSZmbPABeKM454lksCd6LSUnVl6zjpBmsa1ElbiWDJwpXkV8pkrEpYSNSuBdXVtOenrknpXYfvtbuMkrBJ96JlTjrs0aW9RpPWQPQ9VZk8s/s1600/WOGE+401.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcbaXRVSD3XWOKrg1nHP1GGj6Vpco1A0TOoSZmbPABeKM454lksCd6LSUnVl6zjpBmsa1ElbiWDJwpXkV8pkrEpYSNSuBdXVtOenrknpXYfvtbuMkrBJ96JlTjrs0aW9RpPWQPQ9VZk8s/s320/WOGE+401.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Be the first to post a comment with the coordinates and a simple description of the geology seen (in this case what kinds of rocks) and you win the privilege of hosting the next WOGE. If finding information about the geology is difficult, try doing a search for "geologic map of (country)" or the equivalent in the local language. No Schott rule will be in effect this time. Visit Felix's <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/">blog</a> for an explanation of that, as well as other rules and hints.<br />
<br />

The hint he gave (to focus on the white area in the middle) was the key for me to find the Orakei Korako geothermal area. I guessed that this was a geothermal feature of some kind, and since we were in the southern hemisphere I thought immediately of New Zealand. After that, it was only a matter of finding a few minutes to search.<br />
<br />
For the next edition of WOGE, I will use an area that I have been saving for some time. My image also has a river flowing through it, but you won't find any geysers here...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7VLzxE9V7_4O95WDi0dYtFXbNcCpo5cin62VkDhNJRgioQQTSCkfR-rITzs4S4VlziqKnlUdyrIceEXPuAAcrsZZgcHvLQFB1kaQEIwJ7DMCuPjSwJ-D0lO_CfkODAtA7PVMuH_Vg1VU/s1600/WOGE+392.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7VLzxE9V7_4O95WDi0dYtFXbNcCpo5cin62VkDhNJRgioQQTSCkfR-rITzs4S4VlziqKnlUdyrIceEXPuAAcrsZZgcHvLQFB1kaQEIwJ7DMCuPjSwJ-D0lO_CfkODAtA7PVMuH_Vg1VU/s400/WOGE+392.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As always, you can win by posting a comment with the coordinates <u>and</u> some information about what makes this area interesting geologically. Since things always seem to move a little slower in the summer, there will be no Schott rule this time. If you need to find out what that means, or want to learn more about the game, check out <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/">Felix's WOGE blog</a>. Have fun searching!</div>

I found that the amazing Majlis al Jinn cave was concealed beneath the inconspicuous holes near the center of his image.<br />
<br />
It seems fair to let others use the same approach... Of course, the information on this blog is all related to locations I've used on WOGE before, so it might be helpful to know that my very first WOGE entry is posted <a href="http://lostgeologist.blogspot.com/2010/07/where-on-google-earth-nr-209.html">here</a>. WOGE #364 is the fifth in a series.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi58y22ENfI-Ta9ULR_5of_e2Eiq6YPdiw8xUzi0y-Y3RO0hBZF8f3oRFEk1Bmss6fyxMFJnPqBrsmic274LaCa0CquRBrKZctDzG_27BurVF7ThD56DeVt1DAupS_hM-phWGXEL3aHy1E/s1600/WOGE+564.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi58y22ENfI-Ta9ULR_5of_e2Eiq6YPdiw8xUzi0y-Y3RO0hBZF8f3oRFEk1Bmss6fyxMFJnPqBrsmic274LaCa0CquRBrKZctDzG_27BurVF7ThD56DeVt1DAupS_hM-phWGXEL3aHy1E/s320/WOGE+564.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is meant to be simple, so only the coordinates and a basic explanation of the geologic process are required to win. The Schott Rule is in effect. If you don't know what that means, read <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/rules-of-geological-whereongoogleearth.html">these rules</a> posted by Felix Bossert. You may also find it useful to download his kmz file of past WOGE locations. Posting time below is UTC. <br />
<br />
If you have been following the game, but don't have the time to search large areas, this is your chance! With a few minutes and a little creative thinking you should be able to solve this one. Once you get close enough, everything will become clear.<br />
<br />Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09615753082396788340noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244188224231734238.post-39198996690738437802012-07-29T15:59:00.000+01:002012-08-17T23:57:09.663+01:00WOGE 352 Revised Again!Thanks to several hints from Felix I was finally able to solve <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/2012/07/where-on-google-earth-351.html">WOGE 351</a>. The Dendi Caldera in Ethiopia seems like it would be an interesting place to visit. I had already wasted a modest amount of time searching areas around the Mediterranean before I caught on to the second picture. A Google image search for "round thatched huts" turned up a number of pictures from Ethiopia mixed with those from various tropical islands. Once I began searching the right county it took just a few minutes to locate the lake in the image. Maybe this will help me recover from the embarrassment of not recognizing Ron's <a href="http://ron.outcrop.org/blog/?p=1615">WOGE 350</a> even though I had found the location when it was Peter's <a href="http://pluffi.smugmug.com/gallery/4206594_PBb4L/1412535024_zQjRJxq#%21i=1412535024&k=zQjRJxq">WOGE 304</a>.<br />
<br />
Now its time for WOGE 352. Once you locate this area it should be relatively easy to find some good information about the geology. As always, be the first person to post a comment with the coordinates of the location and some explanation of the processes or features that make it geologically interesting and you will win the privilege of hosting the next challenge. See Felix Bossert's <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/">blog</a> for complete rules and hints. Since the game has been a little slow lately, the Schott rule is not in effect, and I will post a first hint in just a few days if necessary. Have fun!<br />

Here is the first hint.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Still looking? Maybe a close-up view will help.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

See the little thatched huts? But it's not quite the same as in Felix's last edition.<br />
<br />
Here is another hint: According to the <a href="http://www.volcano.si.edu/">Global Volcanism Program</a> the closest Holocene volcano is almost 2000 km from this location.<br />
<br />
Maybe it will help if I double the view again.<br />

Felix chose to show us the Vistula Spit, a beautiful stretch of shoreline near the southern end of the Baltic Sea. The most important clue for me was the vegetation: it appeared to be a temperate forest rather than a tropical one, so the number of coastlines I needed to check was greatly reduced.<br />
<br />
I had a great location in mind for my next WOGE win, but I have decided to put it on hold. Instead, I will offer anyone who was busy searching for gracefully curved beaches the chance to continue doing so. As always, be the first person to post a comment with the coordinates of the image and a basic description of the geology, and you win the privilege of hosting the next WOGE. (See complete rules and search hints <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/">here</a>.) Since Felix did not mention the Schott rule last time, I will not invoke it here either. Have fun searching!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRwmY5WnoKerNz-raOVMtm1JWq4FwD8hag9RkbL6CxTFBumn08qAhaSQHOBVnrW1F7m4GY1hwePb1cspEoXCjvj4KQc-BQiVGHc31xEF3gpoyTsVz1a_iaHsVMwrvSpCMXEmEmkPXrhbE/s1600/WOGE+345.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRwmY5WnoKerNz-raOVMtm1JWq4FwD8hag9RkbL6CxTFBumn08qAhaSQHOBVnrW1F7m4GY1hwePb1cspEoXCjvj4KQc-BQiVGHc31xEF3gpoyTsVz1a_iaHsVMwrvSpCMXEmEmkPXrhbE/s320/WOGE+345.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I welcome any feedback my fellow WOGE players would like to give on whether this almost identical search is a good idea or not. If this edition is not solved in a few days I will give a slightly adjusted view so that the game can move on quickly to something else.<br />
<br />
It has been a few days, so here is a larger view.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This was a bit confusing at first because the shadows would normally suggest a northern hemisphere location, but the snow has clearly been sculpted by strong, persistent south winds. After I checked a few areas near Greenland I realized that if you went far enough south and took a picture in the summer the sunlight might also be coming from the south. I went around Antarctica checking the scattered ice-free areas and finally found Cape Royds.<br />
<br />
Since I was able to locate a cleverly selected location from the famous Ron Schott himself, it would be ungrateful to put any limits on this edition. To win, just post a comment giving the coordinates of the Google Earth image and an explanation of what we are looking at (geologically speaking). A mention of the specific rocks/minerals found here might be nice this time. Also, extra credit if you can figure out how this location is a first for WOGE.<br />

I then made a very unscientific judgment that the landscape was not "red" enough to fit most parts of Australia or Southern Africa. I began searching in South America by tracing the rivers in areas that seemed promising. Eventually I was able to discover the Pozo de las Animas, a dramatic pair of sinkholes in Argentina.<br />
<br />
For the next edition of WOGE I will try to keep things simple (but interesting) so that the game will move along quickly. The <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/rules-of-geological-whereongoogleearth.html">Schott rule</a> will be in effect. The posting time below is in UTC. As always, find the coordinates of the Google Earth image and tell us something about the geology of the location. The winner gets to host the next challenge. Have fun!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinov-i9tMS3h6nncdWHIXrBbU0iY994fteYjPrWeMzSpQclOz4r1hBsw21OjJfi7PKk-tw2iXG6bKHjnO3Q3ARpzSbNVJCSXoqVt47rsZJ_uo-uJyVPZPP10TARq9iB4QmsePaRSlCsjU/s1600/WOGE+331.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinov-i9tMS3h6nncdWHIXrBbU0iY994fteYjPrWeMzSpQclOz4r1hBsw21OjJfi7PKk-tw2iXG6bKHjnO3Q3ARpzSbNVJCSXoqVt47rsZJ_uo-uJyVPZPP10TARq9iB4QmsePaRSlCsjU/s320/WOGE+331.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is a larger "historical view" that shows more of the key feature.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyiOUw9phFBIL12QCuqEZ1GM9neCFaf96y8WlRJUQyhpYm-hm7G6jz2c7LzNy3rovoiB-IdlydSYXe2P95ym5Ly80iMKq65kqf1CB3TbJIEcoN5Wldt4HFuHC_zxtQqnhbXf7oOAYu8xs/s1600/WOGE+331+Hint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="175" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyiOUw9phFBIL12QCuqEZ1GM9neCFaf96y8WlRJUQyhpYm-hm7G6jz2c7LzNy3rovoiB-IdlydSYXe2P95ym5Ly80iMKq65kqf1CB3TbJIEcoN5Wldt4HFuHC_zxtQqnhbXf7oOAYu8xs/s320/WOGE+331+Hint.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is not another location to search for, just a hint about the geology seen above.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is another historical view that might reveal something about the climate at this location.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisJkpvJ82c0gI0SqsLRjTzO7a5j55JJpqjxBxdpxQdAKEuxKyIGQxgH2_eCELWh8DNMUjj-xrGGVLrSGthjvRk1TbddvQaFjSun7erUYTmFlxGGT4oK4huUVJC5TTzpcQWX6DN3uBdu9k/s1600/WOGE+331+Hint+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisJkpvJ82c0gI0SqsLRjTzO7a5j55JJpqjxBxdpxQdAKEuxKyIGQxgH2_eCELWh8DNMUjj-xrGGVLrSGthjvRk1TbddvQaFjSun7erUYTmFlxGGT4oK4huUVJC5TTzpcQWX6DN3uBdu9k/s320/WOGE+331+Hint+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, if the detail were greater you would be able to find more than two dozen small boats in the second image above. Must be a popular place for day trips. Maybe a larger view will help.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Then it took a little more time to brush up on tundra geology.<br />
<br />
For the next edition I have selected an image that could be very tricky to find, so I would like to try something a little different. For about the first 34 hours this edition will be unrestricted. If it has not been solved by then, I will post a second image. The second image will make a very good opportunity for someone new to win the game, so the Schott rule will apply from that point on. As always, the first person to identify the location and tell something about the geology gets to choose the next WOGE. If you have not played before, be sure to check out the <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/rules-of-geological-whereongoogleearth.html">rules</a> and <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/new-players.html">tips for new players</a> that Felix graciously provides on his blog. Here is the picture. Ready. Set. Go!<br />

As promised, here is the second picture. This means that the Schott rule is in effect, starting at 3:07 UTC January 3. Remember that you must include the geology of this location to be declared the winner. Nothing very technical is needed, just a general description.<br />

(This probably indicates that I have spent too much time on Google Earth lately.) I focused on that part of the world, and specifically on areas where reddish images met grayish ones. I discovered that we were looking at a spectacularly beautiful portion of the Zanskar Shear Zone in Kashmir. I envy Simon Wellings, who has visited the area in person rather than by computer.<br />

For WOGE 323 I will offer an area that would be considerably easier to visit, if you cared to. The oddly colored lake in the picture has both a ancient and a modern geologic story to tell. Neither one is complicated or difficult to find (once you know the name of the lake so you can Google it :-) However, be sure to read far enough to get the right facts. One source contains incorrect information that is corrected a little further down the page.<br />

<br />
For anyone new to Where on Google Earth, the winner is the first person to post a comment with the coordinates of the location shown and some information about the geology of interest. More complete rules and hints can be found <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/">here</a>. No restrictions on this edition. Have fun searching!<br />
<br />
It has been a few days so I will provide another view. The mystery lake is not visible in this image, but it should provide a few clues about where to look for it.<br />

I happened to log on at the right moment, and I was able to find Hiti Atoll in the South Pacific easily just by flying aimlessly over some of the areas where coral atolls are common. Thanks to Péter Luffi also, for graciously waiting just long enough for me to post my comment first :-)<br />
<br />
Now, what to post for WOGE 320... Thanks to Felix again, for your suggestion! I have seen this joked about, but I don't know if anyone has actually done it. So here it is -- A single sand dune in the middle of a desert.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgckEf5rT8ZaEKOoHtOk4lnomnPARjpvUsejw1jBeDC8MmtDFvP2nbzfHemlm25ObmdyeOdL9bzIN0YEACdak-L9ldPNfKTuk-UVmxLf2KEX9m8p6ta3cV9k85dDxQAP22IUxsSn8J1cPI/s1600/WOGE+320.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgckEf5rT8ZaEKOoHtOk4lnomnPARjpvUsejw1jBeDC8MmtDFvP2nbzfHemlm25ObmdyeOdL9bzIN0YEACdak-L9ldPNfKTuk-UVmxLf2KEX9m8p6ta3cV9k85dDxQAP22IUxsSn8J1cPI/s320/WOGE+320.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I will upload larger views if it is necessary, but I suspect this may be an easy challenge for some players. As always, the first person to find this location with Google Earth and provide a brief description of the geology wins the privilege of providing the next challenge. I will invoke the Schott Rule this time, just because no one has used it in the last month. If you don't know what the Schott Rule is, then check out the <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/new-players.html">New Players</a> section at Felix's blog. Posting time is 3:05 UTC<br />
<br />
It has been a few days, so I am providing a more standard view. This is technically a "historical image", but the part with the sand dune is exactly the same. When you find the location on Google Earth you might notice that something interesting happened in the ten days after this image was made.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmISros9udkmInvykDxVKqVgQu3ot4Z3hPOmiRmwlxGGlsN7mrYLZZnux9caXhQWnSriTcaJ2IQmn8Dj6Ig5bHLZGaoH4AGpVf6ALElrysff_vFdDAC9sWXyEiDUhA3rQDwvPmF0FzkNA/s1600/WOGE+320-5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmISros9udkmInvykDxVKqVgQu3ot4Z3hPOmiRmwlxGGlsN7mrYLZZnux9caXhQWnSriTcaJ2IQmn8Dj6Ig5bHLZGaoH4AGpVf6ALElrysff_vFdDAC9sWXyEiDUhA3rQDwvPmF0FzkNA/s320/WOGE+320-5.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did not expect that this would be a difficult challenge, but now I suspect that everyone may be looking in the wrong deserts. I would rather not give an even larger view, since it would make things too easy. Instead, I give you a close-up view of part of the dune at top center in the second image. I hope that a careful look at this will give someone the hint they need to find the proper desert. If you have already spent more than fifteen or twenty minutes searching in a particular country, you are probably on the wrong track.</div>

I have no idea what the location is or what the geology of interest is, but Mathias states that the location should not be too hard to find, and that nothing fancy is required for geological information. He is not invoking the Schott rule. I will sit out this round, so I look forward to seeing who finds this.<br />

I focused my search on that part of the world and after about forty minutes I found the right location just across the border in Albania. However, finding information about the geology took much longer. I was glad that the puzzle had not yet been solved when I finally got back to it.<br />
<br />
In keeping with the spirit of Felix Bossert's recent encouragement for <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/new-players.html">new players</a>, I will offer a simple challenge for WOGE 310. If you follow the suggestions he gives, you should be able to find this interesting valley rather quickly. In addition to the location, be sure to tell us something basic about the geologic history. Nothing fancy is required, just a simple explanation of how it was formed. Since this is meant to be an easy WOGE, the Schott Rule is in effect. (Go <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/rules-of-geological-whereongoogleearth.html">here</a> for an explanation of WOGE rules.)<br />

Hopefully my selection for the next edition will be less challenging. I tried to find a perfect spot for all of the geologists out there who like to take their work home with them. As always, the first one to find the coordinates and tell us something about the geology of the area will win the privilege of hosting the next WOGE challenge. Since the large dimensions of the view Péter gave were very helpful in the search, I will return the favor. None of my previous three WOGE pictures have included any real rock formations, so this time I will give you a site that is know for interesting and beautiful rock formations. Since they are a little difficult to pick out, I have included a close-up image.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjts3Ch0InBB6BSG6xFG0ckX2FXVp71YO1OTLeWIhkLIWSrZRhy6pk1xoCgID3Gn41ixRCsx_7m0urkuJjnOiy11DpXuDq-XUCB2y8Nrv4QWtJH-1tNHPk1ExzO4Z02uzw4BDnVjEkYaaM/s1600/WOGE_305.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="176" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjts3Ch0InBB6BSG6xFG0ckX2FXVp71YO1OTLeWIhkLIWSrZRhy6pk1xoCgID3Gn41ixRCsx_7m0urkuJjnOiy11DpXuDq-XUCB2y8Nrv4QWtJH-1tNHPk1ExzO4Z02uzw4BDnVjEkYaaM/s320/WOGE_305.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />

However, they are quite interesting because of where they are. Finding information about this site can be challenging, so here is a hint: once you find the location in Google Earth, pull back and do a Google search for the names of some of the towns nearby.<br />
<br />
I will invoke the Schott rule (past winners must wait one hour for each time they have won - correct post time is 20:15 UTC) just because no one has used it in about a month. To win the challenge you must find the location and give a basic description of what is of geologic interest here. For more complete rules of WOGE go <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/rules-of-geological-whereongoogleearth.html">here</a>.<br />

I usually narrow my search area by looking to see what part of the world someone's previous WOGE posts were in, but Péter Luffi has won so many times that it was no help. I just kept looking in every southern hemisphere desert I could think of, until I finally found the spot in arid western Argentina.<br />
Below is WOGE #302. Please note that I have used an "historic image" from Google Earth not just to make things more difficult, but because this image shows the features of geologic interest a little more clearly than the current one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDhb5uZLWCIzVZs2_SCHViYsDhNXMoatcmaKSKxG_oXS9xp1T1SDHa5aoC8ZESLAPhygA-jog_h2gomrkWwJYTEnzljF5dOSANFtF8EzozK0DV-0j7xp31_H5a8jqHH748u7bzcNqb4yA/s1600/WOGE+302.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="194" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDhb5uZLWCIzVZs2_SCHViYsDhNXMoatcmaKSKxG_oXS9xp1T1SDHa5aoC8ZESLAPhygA-jog_h2gomrkWwJYTEnzljF5dOSANFtF8EzozK0DV-0j7xp31_H5a8jqHH748u7bzcNqb4yA/s320/WOGE+302.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Once you find this location, information on the geology (and lots of great pictures) will be easy to find. I will not invoke the "Schott rule" this time. In case anyone doesn't know what WOGE is, you can find a brief explanation (and a link for more details) in my previous post. Have fun everyone!<br />
<br />
Now that this edition of WOGE has been solved, I will provide some color. Felix Bossert shares an excellent description of the geology in his comment.<br />

I think this edition will be easy for at least some people, so I am invoking the Schott rule (past winners must wait one hour for each time they have won). I have also rotated the image so that North is not up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilBkiHS-EdyACFlBXSxkboQD0wk5OVNk49KiUuCZipuo7C9xMoIoVdfeNS17H2KSAX0qR8Ws2zEfyg6cVdYlyC2bUx7-co0TApyjG3ONKqbZTOJ0Qp6Ly-v0LCLUiIWT8konaN8a4a2YA/s1600/WOGE+%2523277.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilBkiHS-EdyACFlBXSxkboQD0wk5OVNk49KiUuCZipuo7C9xMoIoVdfeNS17H2KSAX0qR8Ws2zEfyg6cVdYlyC2bUx7-co0TApyjG3ONKqbZTOJ0Qp6Ly-v0LCLUiIWT8konaN8a4a2YA/s320/WOGE+%2523277.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>For anyone new to WOGE, to win you must identify the location shown (by name and/or coordinates) and offer some comment on the geology (go <a href="http://woge-felix.blogspot.com/p/rules-of-geological-whereongoogleearth.html">here</a> for a more complete explanation of the rules). Once you have found my location it will be easy to find out about the interesting geology that underlies the man-made features you see. The winner gets to post the next WOGE. If no one finds this within the next day, I will post a second picture.Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09615753082396788340noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8244188224231734238.post-23957869234487375422011-03-27T23:00:00.000+01:002011-03-27T23:00:17.649+01:00Just TestingI am new to blogging so this is just a test to see how my blog looks.Matthewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09615753082396788340noreply@blogger.com0
